It’s very naive what I am going to write but some days I feel very discouraged. The title of this post is as naive as its content; there never were real democracies. Nevertheless, the moment we live in is a quite low level for humanity.
Just a few examples;
- The New Migration Pact the European Commission recently released promotes and facilitates expulsions and detentions, its goal is to discourage and further limit migration and it’s based on false assumptions dictated by racism and fear.
- I heard that around 17 million Americans don’t have health insurance. I didn’t try hard but I don’t understand how Americans don’t get that having health insurance should be a basic right in modern wealthy democracies. How is it possible that the US act as a promoter and example of democracy, when they don’t provide something as basic as health services to their population?
- Profit and short term solutions (elected politicians only care about what happens during their term and up to next elections) are always the priority. Water shortage, CO2 emissions, these issues seem impossible to tackle because it would mean going against companies with a lot of power. Once again, the wealth and interests of a small group prevail on the preservation of our planet. Trade agreements such as the EU-Mercosur agreement lead to intensive use of land, in order to produce meat and soja to export, resulting in the destruction of the Amazon rainforest and fires.
- Racism against black people and Muslims has reached such a high point that I can only hope it’s the peak and it will get down at some point (hopefully soon?).
I think what bothers me the most is that our countries, where all this is happening, are the same that proclaim their constitutions and policies are based on humanity, solidarity and human rights. At least if you cannot implement what you say your values are, have the decency to shut up.
