Family traumas & work

Yesterday I met a friend and ex-colleague I hadn’t seen in a longtime. We had a lot to catch up and ended up talking, among other things, about toxic relationships at work. And this morning I came across this, in a newsletter (from this recently discovered amazing blogger) abound boundaries in professional contexts:

“Something I’ve noticed in many of the stories people share with me about their experiences of struggling with boundaries at work is that we have a habit of inadvertently, sometimes consciously, acting as if our customers/clients/co-workers/employees/boss are our parents, sibling or even childhood bully.

I totally recognise myself in this, it did happen to me to relive a family situation through a toxic work relationship. I emotionally reacted in the same way I would have in the mirror-like family context. Ah, family traumas.
