My youth is fading away and so is consumerism

I saw my cousin’s daughter during the holiday. She is 14 and she loves shopping. Nothing unusual, except that it made me think that my youth finished at the same time as careless shopping did. I guess I can say I was lucky, I was able to ‘enjoy’ consumerism as long as it could last. Not only we destroyed the planet for the future generations but we let them taste consumerism with all its comfort, gadgets, choice of clothes, without giving them the possibility of enjoying them as we did.

Are we more guilty of having over-enjoyed it at the expense of the earth, or for having created this ‘dream’?  Consumerism is not dead, quite the contrary, at least not yet. We are not ready to let go of our privileges. Who would choose a 12 hour bus drive over a 1 hour flight ?

However, consumerism is fading away, as it’s my youth. A funny coincidence? Will I see the end of capitalism before I die? Is it true that capitalism is more and more put into question? I don’t have this impression in my daily life. Whereas I have always had a handful of friends criticising capitalism, this number has not grown. On the other hand, I have the impression of coming across more and more articles on the negative effects of capitalism, such as Chinese complaining about working 12h/6 days a week. Will see. #staytuned
