I couldn’t resist the call of the consumerism sirens and bought new clothes online. Between rent, flight tickets to see my family and friends abroad during the Christmas holidays and new clothes and shoes I bought, I spent over 1,000 euros in a few clicks. More than half of my entire salary gone in a few seconds, without even moving from my couch. #scary #moderntimes.
I had managed to avoid buying any piece of new clothing between 12 August and 5 December. Almost 4 months. #Notbad, but #tobeimproved. It’s like quitting smoking, even if you start again eventually, you gave your lungs a break. I took a break from consumerism. I tell myself that at least I didn’t buy clothes from a retail store chain like H&M & co but from a more ethical (hopefully also sustainable) small business. I have to add that I thought it through, I didn’t just see them and bought them, I found what I wanted online, I left the tab open for a few days and then I bought them. It was not compulsive shopping from an evil store. #smallvictories. I haven’t received them yet, I hope they were worth the defeat!
I started drafting this post last night and finished up this morning. When I woke up I remembered that I had a dream about possessing too many shoes! I don’t remember the details but I was opening my shoe cabinet and realised I had forgotten about the existence of a pair I had recently purchased. Guilt is kicking in. It’s funny how for my generation youth and consumerism without guilt are coming to an end together. I enjoyed them as much as they lasted.
Ah, I can relate… I was planning on saving money for a concert, yet here I am, splurging $64 dollars on the same shirt in different colors. I just know I’m going to end up giving it away after two years too 😦
Thanks for sharing! It feels good to hear similar story 🙂 The main reason I started reducing it is the environment, I am trying to reduce waste. I am buying second hand clothes (I found very cute items!), avoiding plastic bags for food,… Let me how it goes for you!
